So I arrive in Hollywood on weekend business Friday, the annual Visual Effects Society festival: http://www.vesfestival.org (Until recently I worked for the company that produced "Shrek", now at theaters near you.) I check into the Roosevelt Hotel, and lo-and-behold there are a bunch of transvestite vampires gathered around the lobby piano singing songs from RHPS! I've stumbled across the coolest convention I've ever seen! I was a long-time fan in college, attending midnight shows twenty years ago... before many of you were born, I'm sure. :-/ I haven't been to a show in more than a decade, and the joy of vicariously observing you all thrilled me like a born-again "virgin" as I remembered the fun of watching the RHPS those first few dozen times! The Midnight Insanity convention looked like a blast.

I saw the "Macabre Mobile" in the hotel parking lot and caught a glimse of Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson addressing your group, and wished I could have planned better... with a little hair bleach I think I'd make a good Riff Raff and fit right in! :-) (People already mistake me for comedian Steven Wright...)

After the VES sessions ended at 10pm I couldn't wait to get back to the hotel. I love to people-watch, and the expressions on the "regular" hotel patrons on vacation were hilarious! On Saturday I followed the short parade across the street to the movie theater and laughed my ass off as people came out of their films to find you all gathered outside... Favorite moment: a spontaneous rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" complete with full harmonies, "Wayne's World" style! You rock!

Anyway, you appeared to be the friendliest and most adorable bunch of freaks I've seen in a long time. I'd especially like to thank the enchanting "Angel" for saying hello... to everyone who returned my admiring gaze with a smile, and to the tall, purple-horned Trixie whose little wings set my heart a-flutter! I hope you all had a wonderful time.

www.midnightinsanity.org appears to be down, but I look forward to seeing your posted photos eventually... email correspondence or pointers to other relevant websites would be welcome!

I'm in the south San Francisco bay area and will find out where the local cast shows are so I can drag a few RHPS virgins along with me one midnight this summer.

Don't dream it... be it! Thanks again! :-)

shawn.

I am just thankful that the new fans were cool with us old folk hanging out and drinkin' with them. I had the time of my life at this con...I almost felt young. (Sioux)

All your cons are belong to MI.

I believe they just officially invented MonsterCon.
There was nothing but positivity(well of course except for a few couples) throughout the entire con. it was amazing. i've never been to a con with as much stuff successfully packed into it, or as professionally done.
Thursday kicked it off with a great dance party, cool band, and Pat Quinn and Bob Simon hanging out with everyone. I've never seen or heard of a con having a Thurs. event, let alone one so cool.
Friday's special performances were totally awesome. At most cons there's a couple that really drag on, but every single one of em was performed very well. i particularly was enjoyed the collaboration between WUT, Rocky's Whores, and DD. It was full of energy and flashy costumes. well done.
MI's Cabaret with Bob was great, and the Awards were damn funny.
I want to thank everyone in the Shock Treatment cast for making my first time performing Shocky a shit load of fun.
Saturday's movie showings were pretty awesome, and although not an Elvira fan, i found Cassanrda Peterson's commentary to be very witty and interesting, particularly her Rocky tie in.
The costume contest was well run. i loved the idea of the specialist judge, and in fact i had mentioned something similar in conversation with some people about the next Baycon, and it was cool to see it done successfully. BTW, there were some damn creative costumes in there that didn't get showcased, and it's a shame not everyone could see it properly, but it did kill some of the lag some cons tend to have in this area.
The Galaxy theatre was awesome, and aside from the excessive Spike an Mike stuff, the whole thing was awesome. The 5 Eddies was BADASS, and to the other four, YOU GUYS FUCKING ROCKED. MI's tech was excellent, and all the performers were top notch.
The sunday picnic was the perfect end to an amazing con. the comeradery was great, and it was hilarious to see rocky freaks assembled in a park and playing softball no less. BTW, nice touch with the Vegandogs mark.

Now without specifics, here's the list of thank yous for all that contributed to making my con experience the best ever to date:
the entirety of MI, the entirety of my beloved sinners, the WUT/RW contingent...i love you fuckers,Scott J., Steve, KT, Jazzy, Jason, Amy, Scott H. Wayne, Kelly(glad we patched it up), Veronica, Ed, Nate, Heather, Brigid, Brandi, Jen, Marc, Sonja, Sylvia, Richard, ShanShan, Melissa, Julie, Rob, Jarett, Steve, Tinky, Ava, Amber, (their roomate, forgot her name though...sorry), Josh, Grant, Byron, JeFF, Alison, Sebastian, Goofy, Asia, Scott McD, James, Larry V, Jessica, Barbara, Lori, Sheri, Chanda, Toby, Mark, Jaime, -Mike-, Tom, Ron, Hillary, Sanford, and i'm starting to draw blanks, i know i'm forgetting important people, but i think i'll shut up now.

If you would like to add your own lists to this thread, you are more than welcome...

THE GOOD (in no particular order):

1) The Con in general. This was probably the most relaxed con that I've ever been to. It was nice to have everyone actually playing nice for once.
2) Getting to see all of my friends - Ron and Hillary, Tracy, Bernie, Jason (and the whole Sins crew in general), Jamie and Mark B - that I only get to see once or twice a year and meeting a bunch of new people - Melanie, Ryan, and everyone that I'm blanking on names right now.
3) Going to Universal Studios on Friday with Ron, Hillary, and Ryan and getting my SpongeBob Squarepants pillow.
4) Going on late night video commando runs with Devo. ; )
5) Finally getting to play Farley for ST and getting to perform my favorite part of the film, Looking At An Ace.
6) Having BoB constantly bend down to pick up bats on Sunday when I was sitting behind her in the dugout. ; )
7) Coming up with the idea, getting all of the costuming, and doing the Blues Brothers with Ron in less than 6 hours and then realizing that we had a third Brother in Fozzie.
8 The commaraderie (sp?) that was shown by many people at the con. After spending most of Saturday trying to help where I could at the "Columbia Conveyor Belt" (aka Shannon, Rob, Melissa, and Sonja's room) as they worked on Melissa's, Heather's, and Brandi's costumes (and helped Jen when she needed it too), it was cool to see people ready to help each other, even if they aren't on the same cast.
9) Having Patricia Quinn get Jarret to strip at the drop of a hat... literraly.
10) Bernie giving Normandie credit for making the sharks that won awards in the costume contests. A very classy move...

THE BAD (in no particular order)

1) The security breaking up parties on Thursday night and forcing everyone to leave the pool area. I know it's their jobs, but we weren't doing anything that neccesitated that kind of action.
2) Waking up at 2pm on Saturday afternoon. By the time I was eating my breakfast, many people were getting ready for dinner.
3) The jackass gas station guy who gave us the wrong directions out of LA... followed by the jackass gas station woman who gave us the llllooonnnggg directions of how to get from 101 to I5... followed by the jackass CalTrans workers who were ripping up large portions of I5 for some unknown reason. We left the picnic at 4pm and didn't get back to my apartment in San Jose until 3am.
4) Forgetting that I suck when I try to use an aluminum bat. That doesn't mean that I'm brilliant with a wood one, but I can at least control my swing better.
5) Wishing I would have had more time to meet people at the con. There were a couple people that I was really interested in talking to, but I never got the chance.

THE WEIRD (in no particular order)
1) Watching two members of MI's tech crew have a conversation over radios while they were actually standing back to back and only about 10-15 feet apart and didn't realize it on Saturday night.
2) Walking out into the theatre lobby and hearing the audience in line singing loudly, including "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall".
3) Finding the combination Donut, Philly Cheese Steak, and Chinese Food restaurant on Highland Avenue. Only in LA...

THANKS (in no particular order)

1) To all of the members of the con planning board and to everyone in MI in general. You guys and girls worked your asses off to put on a good con and it showed.
2) To Becky and Colleen for puttng up with all of my blocking questions about the ST and RHPS performances...
3)... and to Tracy for constantly having the exact same answer whenever I would ask him a question about anything to do with the con, "Go ask Becky." ; )
4) To Ron and Hillary for saving my ass when the white suit I was supposed to use for Friday's ST show fell threw at the last minute and they brought theirs from NYC.
5) To Eva of BL and her friends Shannon and Amber (aka The SnM Swiss Miss) for hanging out with me while I wandered around the hotel until all hours of the night.
6) To everyone that I performed with on both Friday and Saturday nights. Those are definately two shows that I will remember for the rest of my life.
7) To whoever it was that started chanting "Go Riff! Go Riff!" during my scene.
8) To everyone in general for showing that, while we may perform strangely, we can actually act like adults sometimes too.

I guess that's it. Sorry about the length, but this con seems to have a lot more to mention than previous ones.

See you round like a record,

I know there'll be stuff I forget that I'll post later, but oh well...

THE GOOD (in the order that I think of it)
- Seeing so many old friends and making so many new ones. Love you guys!
- Pat telling me a delightful story about Barry Humphries knocking over the set while filming the LBD sequence.
- The massage I got on Venice Beach.
- Bernie yelling "She's on Sins!" during the costume contest judging and results.
- Watching the softball game. Hilarious.
- Seeing the documentary and the Elvira movie with the RH crowd, which is just the way those films are meant to be seen. :-)
- Deciding to stay over Sunday night at the last minute. A wise decision, as it turned out.
- The ST show Friday - a lot of improvised blocking pulled off near-perfectly.
- Group Eddie on Saturday night. An excellent idea, and great fun to watch! (Loved watching Brad struggle to hold onto all those saxes.)
- The preshows I saw (WUT/RW and Sins). Loved 'em!

THE BAD
- The poor acoustics in the ballroom that garbled a lot of the audio.
- Having to miss most of the preshows while I changed for ST on Friday.
- Accidentially leaving my can of Bon Ami at the theater on Saturday. (I could have used it to get the gray goop out of my hair, too.)
- The pajama party getting broken up by security not two minutes after I'd arrived there. (I loved security's logic, too - they told us we all had to get off the patio and into the host's room, then announced the room had too many people in it and we had to disperse.)
- People who let the costume contest ruin their (and other peoples') fun. 'Nuff said.

THE WEIRD BUT FUN
- Walking around the Chinese Theater with Rifffff and Polly Esther, both in costume, and counting how many tourists wanted pictures with them.
- Impromptu group singalongs of "Denton USA" on the bus to Venice and while walking around Roxbury park.
- Thinking the pizzeria by the hotel had a line out the door Saturday night ... only to find it was tourists taking pictures of the Japanese cast, who were having dinner in full costume.
- Going for donuts at 3am.
- The two grassy fields at the park that were reserved for lawn bowling and croquet. Only in Beverly Hills, ladies and gentlemen.

THANKS
- First and foremost to MI, for throwing such a KICK-ASS con. I swear, RH conventions get progressively better.
- Joseph of Sins for letting Sylvia and me crash at his house Sunday night.
- Ron Maxwell for buying me a drink at the party on Thursday.
- Sebastian for letting me make smartass remarks on his recorded commentary of the softball game.
- Whoever it was that wanted a picture with me during the costume contest judging. I was very flattered. (People aren't usually clamoring for Crim pics.)
- Fozzie for the tour of Culver City on Friday. ;-)
- Melissa Pearce for agreeing to wear a pink tutu so she and I could dress as Dexter and DeeDee at the Friday night party.
- Everyone who helped make this con a most memorable experience!
