The end is near . . . End of what?
End of life as you know it. End of your
perspective of Rocky Horror as being a Long
Beach phenomenon which keeps calling you
back, inexplicably, week after week, year after
year. Yes, the end. For in just 21 days
(give or take), Midnight Insanity presents to
you, "The Light in the Darkness" . . . the 22nd
Anniversary to The Rocky Horror Picture
Show!!! Yes, it's been 22 years and we're
throwing the big bash! A veritable
Transylvanian Paradise, the greatest minds
in the world of Rocky Horror (along with
quite a few highly attractive bods!) will be
here, performing special numbers, competing
in costume contests, and Time Warping the
night away. Tickets are available in the
lobby at the merchandising table. We hope
to see you there (er, here!)
. . . and if you believe *that*, we have a bridge we'd like to sell you. A couple weeks ago, several cast members showed up to the show smelling of a bonfire. We decided to spend a few hours hanging out at the beach, before the show, roasting marshmallows and weenies, and drinking lots of "Josta" cola. So we got the fire started and it was burning pretty good . . . uhhh, |
that is until some unnamed individual
tossed a can of Josta into the fire-pit. Well,
that sucker started to sizzle pretty quick
and soon enough, it popped! This had the
effect of sending little bits of hot, burning
embers in *every* direction, covering a good
15 feet away from the fire-pit itself. I have
to say, we never *did* see a shower of
sparks quite like that . . . the embers turned
a nearby beach blanket into swiss-cheese!!
We also caught the attention of the nearby
surrounding fire-pits . . . yes, we're
celebrities, even at the beach!! Now, about
this time, we should probably caution you
about trying this at home. The above was
conducted by trained, Midnight Insanity
professionals who *know* how to play with
fire. Er, well, you know what we mean.
Anyway, subsequent attempts to reproduce
the effect (and capture it on video) refused
to pan out. Perhaps it's a sign not to leave
too much incriminating evidence around.
See that guy in the corset, fishnets and high heels? Yeah, that guy. That's Dr. Frank-N-Furter, or, "Tim Curry". Yes, Tim Curry, that guy you saw in numerous movies from "Three Musketeers" to "Muppet Treasure Island" . . . or for you drag-fans, check out "Loaded Weapon 1". Well, news on the wire is that Tim has decided to spend |
some time on the small screen for a bit . . .
and we're not talking about some two-bit
video-showing of Rocky Horror, either!!!
Nope, Tim recently finished a pilot for a new
sitcom called "Over the Top", and it did so
well, ABC has picked it up for their fall
season!!! Tim will be playing "Simon
Ferguson", and out-of-work actor. Over the
Top also features Annie Potts as Tim's ex-
wife. Annie is Tim's real-life ex-girlfriend . . .
talk about typecasting!!! :-) The new show
is scheduled to air on Tuesday nights at
8:591pm. Of course, you have to wait till
September to see it. :-(
Didja catch it? The season finale for "The Drew Carey Show" was broadcast this month, and features a dance number, including "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", and "The Time Warp"!!! How do we know?! We were *there*!!! Yes, that's right, all those people in the background you see dressed in Rocky costumes are non-other than your home cast, "Midnight Insanity". We sacrificed a night (like, an *entire* night), and headed on up to Hollywood to watch them spend 12 hours on a 5-minute scene. Now, we're not the dancers, because they went and hired professional dancers for that sort of thing. And no, they didn't do an official "Time Warp" dance. Talk to the lawyers about that one . . . as it was explained to us, they got rights to use the song, and the characters, but also doing the correct dance meant they would also have to adhere to dozens of other requirements, that would take away their creative control. Overall, I thought the dance they did was pretty cool, and they |
definitely held their own against those
"Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" people. All in
all, it was a cool scene, and we enjoyed being
part of it. You can probably catch it in the
re-runs, the episode is titled "New York and
Queens", and will probably air again
sometime in August/September, just before
the next season starts.
Have you noticed that ABC seems
to be "The Rocky Horror" network these
days? We have Tim Curry next fall, Drew
Carey paying us homage, and we just had a
very successful season of "Spin City",
featuring Barry Bostwick as "Mayor Randall
Winston". Well, you'll be happy to know (well,
*I'm* happy to know) that "Spin City" has
been signed on for another season! Go
Barry!!!
Midnight insanity would like to thank the Art Theatre Management and crew, for allowing us to perform here *every fucking week*; the Management and crew of the Woodland Hills theatre (Topanga), same reason; Denny's and Shorehouse Café, for putting up with us at all hours of the night; everyone who read this far down . . . since I took the time to write it, you guys *ought* to read it, right? Right???; and, of course, all you folks out there who make it a point to defy your parents and ignore every warning that Rocky Horror is a place for degenerate weirdos who wear strange clothes and makeup and do weird things to "virgins". How'd *they* find out?! Oh well, see you during "Time Warp"!!! |
